If you have ethernet for your computer.. do you need a land line also?

Lita Thammorongsa: You can have high speed internet through the phone line WITHOUT having a telephone land line -- you can use your cell as your main phone. It's called a "dark line". Technically, you will still have a phone number, but you will likely never know what it is. The telephone company needs to designate a phone number by which to transmit the internet signal, but you will not be able to use it to make phone calls. We have two houses, both have dark lines. We do not have phone service from the phone company. In our case, we have Vonage (VOIP) which runs over the internet. If we did not have Vonage, we could ahve cell phones. We were also keen to ditch our land line phone service. You may want to consider getting a Magic Jack (www.magicjack.com). For $20 per year, you can make/receive calls to any US or Canada number from anywhere in the world. We have one that we travel with, and no matter where we are we can call our family for 'virtually' free from any! where. It obvisouly doesn't work if the internet is down, but who cares? I get free long distance a majority of the time! And no, I don't work for the company -- I just absolutely love when people invent amazing products that actually work....Show more

Marjory Stromme: if you have DSL, than sadly yes.

Ervin Laeger: you can also connect your computer to internet via your mobile phone with out using landline. use your mobile as modem.

Jammie Taddei: Unfortunately you're asking a question where one part is not relevant to the other. What I believe you're saying is that you want to get rid of your dial-up modem and therefore your land-line, but still want to connect to the Internet. To do so, you will still need an Internet provider that takes advantage of your ethernet adapter in your computer rather than your dial-up modem. Check into your local cable company and phone company for "high speed" options. Then, you can get rid of your land-line and enjoy the ben! efits of high-speed internet. But just to answer your question ! as-is, your Ethernet adapter doesn't just get internet. You must have a dedicated service to deliver it using that port....Show more

Wilfredo Muldoon: if you are using a cable internet provider, then no, you do not need a telephone landline. if your provider uses telephone lines then you may be required to have a landline if you're using dial up, but you should be able to cancel your telephone line because they should be separate. it would be best to phone your internet provider and double check.

Kalyn Proietto: No! If you are using Ethernet to connect to your modem, you do not need a telephone cable connected to your modem unless you want to make and receive telephone calls or faxes from your computer. The Ethernet connection is for Broadband and the telephone modem is for dial-up.Hope this helped.
