Inez Relihan: In general, by your description of what you're looking for, you should be looking at things like Puerto Rico, Settlers of Catan and Die Macher and staying away from the old, standard mass-marketed games that some here have been recommending. I have a couple of additional recommendations though.Go to http://www.boardgamegeek.com/ and look up:Power GridTigris & EuphratesWhatever you decide to get, use this site to look up the best prices: http://www.boardgameprices.com/...Show more

Antonia Mogg: My personal favorite is Balderdash. This game allows you to use your creativity and reasoning skills to wi! n the game. It isn't based on chance. Here are the rules of gameplay:The game begins by all players rolling a die, the high roll chosen to be the first "dasher". The dasher draws a "definition card" from the supplied box, and rolls the die to decide which of the five words listed there shall be used (if a six is rolled, the dasher may choose for him- or herself which word to use). Then the dasher writes the definition (as supplied on the card) on a piece of paper. All other players then write down a definition, which may be an honest attempt to supply the correct definition, or, if they do not know or for tactical reasons decide not to, a fictitious definition for the word designed to sound convincing. The players hand their definitions to the dasher, who checks if any of their definitions are the same as the real definition. If there are any, the player(s) submitting the correct definition is/are immediately awarded three points, and if there is more than one the round is! abandoned (though the points are retained). The definitions, ! including the real definition, are then read out in random order. Players record which answer they believe is correct.Players are awarded two points if they guess the correct definition. Players are awarded one point for each other player who incorrectly chooses the fake definition they wrote. The dasher is awarded three points if no one guesses the correct definition. This is a great party game and depending on how creative the group is it can be a really fun time. :)...Show more

Sabra Roers: My parents wiled away many an hour playing backgammon together. Me, I once fell in love over the game of pente. Didn't work out and now I devote most of my time to the game of go. The go board and pieces can also be! used to play pente and go-moku. There's also a fun game I discovered called Abalone, which involves trying to push your opponent's marbles off the board. It's a fun and esthetically pleasing game. I wish you many hours of fun.
Melina Minneweather: The board game I just can't stop playing...Arkham Horror!Replayability is better than almost any game I have seen. You can play all by yourself or with up to 8 other players. Cooperative play, 1920's era, horror genre, getting eaten by Great Old Ones... fun as heck..(only game that you feel good when you lose)If you like player vs player military type games I would recommend:Memoir 44Twilight Imperium 3Axis and AlliesNexus-Ops (kind of a rip off of Twilight, but cheaper and faster play)Other good co-op games that I have:Lord of the RingsBetrayal at House on the HillDescent...Show more

Foster Koopmann: If you're looking for a board game with far reaching strategy, easy to learn rules (takes 5mn), long path to master it (takes whole life), and very nice aestethics values (good looking board and pieces, and the right moves are usually the better looking ones), try : Go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(board_game) This ancient chinese game (probably around 3000 years old) h! as only very simple rules, and a pacific goal: occupy more space than your opponent (you don't have to take any of his/her pieces to do so, but games usually involve quite serious "battles").You can start on a smaller (9x9 or 13x13) board, but the real one is 19x19 (which gives more importance to whole-board thinking over local fights). Games last from 5mn (blitz) to usually 30minutes per player (1 hour per players in tournaments, usually, with additional times possible once you reach that limit)Each stage of the game (beginning, middle and end-game) are both very different and linked together. The game start with an empty board (unless you or you opponent starts with 'handicap stones' to help even the levels (another nice feature of that game!))You build little by little groups of stones that will give you territory, influence, tactical and strategical opportunities (a stone can affect the whole board, or force your opponent in a "bad shape", etc)You can develop your own s! tyle (fighters, defenders, people who prefer to take territory and othe! r who priviledge "influence", etc)You'll find now lots of goot litterature and websites and local Go clubs to get you started (it's very good to start in a go club, as online you don't get the same social interactions and individual help on getting started)If you go online, avoid the "yahoo Go" area though, it's much preferable to use a site like KGS (http://www.gokgs.com), which is free of charge and contains a good number of people, and interresting ways to learn (especially their (paying) KGS+ feature with lots of good lessons) or IGS (http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/ , free as well) as people on those websites are much better players usually (try kgs first, as the interface is much better and the teaching features are more developped, then once you master the game a bit try IGS and other less_known go servers as people there play longer and more "serious" games, with maybe less fighting but usually more satisfactory moves)once again, try the wikipedia link as it prese! nt the game in more details (with the rules too), and come into this very interresting and, yes, life changing game! (I used to like chess, but i can't get interrested in chess games anymore since I discovered a (little) bit of the Go games depth)(I may sound like too one-sided, but you have to play it to understand how good it is)...Show more

Clemente Schoeck: Blot231 has a bunch of good suggestions, though I would caution you that Die Macher can easily run 5 hours for a first game and 3 hours for later games, so that may be a bit longer than you had in mind! Its got a lot of depth to it, but its not going to be to everyone's taste.More information about how many people you are likely to be playing with, what sort of themes you might enjoy, and what you mean by 'long' wou! ld be helpful. If you go to boardgamegeek.com and post a question like t! his with some more details, you can probably get tons of feedback. Here's a sampling across a bunch of genres:Settlers of Catan is a great building and trading game. It needs at least 3 players, and while it has a lot of depth it is very easy to learn. There are a few expansions for it to give it more variety and options, but you would want to just start with the basic game.Puerto Rico is a classic heavy strategy game; its got lots of resource management and many interesting choices to make. It runs maybe an hour and a half. It does not have a lot of direct interaction between the players, but the choices you make strongly influence everyone else. Thematically, its about building and managing the town and plantations of Puerto Rico.Traders of Genoa is a game filled with trading and wheeling and dealing. You try to make money by delivering orders and messages, but everything in the game is up for trade and there's constant negotiation. Needs at least 3 players.Nexus Op! s is a strategy combat game; it plays a bit like a much faster and more interesting variant of risk. There's a variety of units to use and you have to constantly adapt your tactics to your missions; it feels a lot like a board game version of Starcraft.Formula De is a formula car racing game that really captures the racing theme; you have to carefully balance your speed (go too fast and you can't make the curves) and the wear on your tires. Its very fast moving and offers lots of options to increase the level of detail (you can add in weather, pit stops, slipstreaming and more). For a completely different kind of racing game, Pitchcar (or Pitchcar Mini) involves wooden tracks and 'carom' tokens that are flicked around the board. From kids to partying college students to grandparents, I have yet to play this game with anyone who didn't like it. But its NOT what you want if you want a heavy thinking game.Factory Fun is my current addiction. Very low interaction, but if yo! u enjoy logic and puzzle solving, this is one to have. Plays with 2-4;! takes about 45 minutes (or 30 with experienced players) but we almost always end up playing a few games in a row.I recommend timewellspent.org as a place to order games from; their prices and service are excellent.Good luck finding something!...Show more
